Chicago Native Heather Mack Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy
Guilty Plea in Illinois District Court
Heather Mack, a 27-year-old Chicago woman, has pleaded guilty in a U.S. District Court in Illinois to conspiring to kill a U.S. national in the 2014 death of her mother, Sheila von Wiese. The murder occurred while Mack and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, were on vacation in Bali, Indonesia.
Murder Conviction and Sentencing
Mack was sentenced to 26 years in federal prison on Wednesday for her role in the murder. According to prosecutors, Mack and Schaefer killed von Wiese in a hotel room and then stuffed her body into a suitcase. The couple was arrested shortly after the murder and convicted by an Indonesian court in 2015.
Schaefer's Conviction and Sentence
Schaefer was also convicted in the murder and sentenced to death by the Indonesian court. He remains on death row in Bali.
